How exactly does EMS work?
During voluntary training of targeted muscle groups (i.e. weight lifting) your brain is capable of stimulating most of the muscle fibres, but not all of them. Your body always holds some back in reserve. The EMS current is capable of doing what your brain can’t: it stimulates ALL the muscle fibres by activating the muscle fibre motor neurons directly.
The EMS current causes the muscle fibres to contract and relax involuntarily at pulse rate of 400 times per second during the duty cycle. This high frequency excitation doesn’t allow the fibres to relax between the pulses causing a smooth, consistent muscle contraction and complete workout of all the muscle fibres in the targeted area and it does so without producing cardiovascular and psychological fatigue.
Here’s another way to look at it; flex your abs as hard as you can for 2 seconds and then relax them for a second. This is what’s called an isometric exercise. Remember, you're not actually flexing all the muscle fibres when you do this. Now try and do this for 18 minutes straight, without stopping! That’s essentially what you’re getting during an 18 minute EMS session but without the obvious cardio or psychological fatigue - and, you're contracting ALL your muscle fibres.
Is the EMS electro muscle stimulation treatment safe?
Yes, it is safe for almost everyone. There is a medical form that is filled out during the Trial session to check for contra-conditions. Potential clients with Haemophila, Thrombosis or a Pacemaker would need their Doctors permission. Please call for more details.
Does EMS really work?
Try EMS just once and you will know. After your treatment you will feel the results.
How many inches will I lose?
Every body is different so the results will vary. Clients have lost anywhere from 1/4" up to almost 8" after 10 sessions.
How long do the effects last?
When you activate your muscles with normal exercise you are usually only able to access about 50% to 60% of your muscle fibres, unless you are a trained athlete. With EMS, you exercise 100% of your muscle fibres in the targeted area so the effects should typically last considerably longer than with active exercise. If your weight remains constant, the effects will last 6 - 8 months. If you add regular exercise and a healthy diet to your routine, the results can last indefinitely.
What does it feel like?
At no time will you feel any pain. It is a relaxing and non-invasive treatment. You will feel a tingling sensation and gentle contractions of your targeted muscles.
Will my muscles ache after a treatment as they do after a strenuous gym workout?
During a treatment your body does not require glucose which is normally utilized during exercise. This is an important benefit because the body burns the surrounding fat cells without decreasing glucose levels. This prevents build-up of lactic acid which can normally cause pain after an intense workout.
Can these treatments help me lose weight?
It's well known that muscle consumes far more calories per day than fat. If you build more muscle, then your calorie consumption goes up and you obtain a proportionate weight loss, provided your eating habits remain the same. If you go on a diet at the same time as carrying out an EMS treatment program, you will lose weight. Add a regular exercise program (walking 30 minutes briskly each day) and the results will be even greater.
I've just had a baby. Can this help get my stomach muscles back into shape?
There is no faster or easier method of correcting the stretched tummy muscles after childbirth. You can start treatments six weeks after childbirth or six months after a cesarean section.
I am getting up there in age and have very poor muscle tone. Can these treatments help?
Of course. Age is no barrier and where there is more room for improvement, the results seem even more dramatic. When complemented by a sensible diet and regular exercise, you will see toning and quick and visible inch loss. Many people also experience less back pain and find they sleep better at night.
Can EMS treatments help men get into shape?
Yes, and men's bodys can respond even more dramatically than woman's bodys due to having more muscle mass. Men have treatments for the same reasons as women. To pull in their stomachs, improve specific muscle groups or as an injury-free alternative to complement traditional exercise and sport.
Is EMS the same as TENS?
No. "TENS" is the acronym for Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation. A "TENS unit" is a pocket-size, portable, battery-operated device or a medical electrical device found in physiotherapy facilities that sends electrical impulses to certain parts of the body to block pain signals. It does NOT stimulate muscle fibre and has no ability to tone or strengthen muscles. Some clients report that the EMS ‘tickling’ sensation is quite similar, though.
Is EMS the same as those abdominal belts I've seen on TV?
NO! In 2002 the US Federal Trade Commission filed false advertising complaints against the marketers of the AB Energizer, AbTronic, and Fast Abs devices, all of which claimed to use electronic muscle stimulation (EMS) to give users "six pack" or "washboard" abs without exercise or effort and to burn fat and remove cellulite. The FTC won and the defendants paid over 5 million dollars to settle and are banned from marketing or advertising these types of machines.
These machines were very low power, low frequency, battery operated "magic black boxes". They could not produce the results they claimed and in some cases were dangerous to the users. The EMS Program and equipment has nothing in common with these. EMS equipment is registered in Canada with the Canadian Standards Association (CSA) and in the United States with Underwriters Laboratories (UL) as Medical Electrical Equipment.
Who uses EMS?
EMS has been used in European beauty centres and spas to provide muscle toning and inch loss programs for over 25 years. EMS is also used in rehabilitative medicine, sports medicine, space medicine and by professional athletes. Bruce Lee used it extensively to achieve muscle toning that his martial arts training alone couldn’t provide him. Others such as World Cup downhill skiing champion Hermann Maier, 5-time triathlon world champion Simon Lesing, and US Open & French Open Champion Justine Henin-Hardenne used EMS to supplement their training during their pinnacle years. The US Medical Advisory Committee has allowed the use of EMS systems by amateur athletes since the 1972 Summer Olympics.
How many areas can I target in a single session?
One area is targeted in a single session which is booked for 30 minutes. A client may choose to treat two or even three target areas during a visit. This following muscle target groups would be considered three sessions - abdominal, buttock & thigh treatments.
How often should I come for a treatment?
For each specific area three times in the first week and after that twice a week.
Should I do anything after I finish a session?
In order to enhance the lymphatic drainage process, which is stimulated when the muscles contract and relax, you are encouraged to drink a glass of water before a session and drink several glasses after a session to assist your body with elimination of toxins.
If I get EMS treatments, can I avoid the gym altogether?
No, you won't want to. Once you have stimulated these under utilized muscles, you will be raring to go. You will find your session at the gym, a walk, or a jog a real pleasure.
